Module 2 — Lesson 11

Many newsletter writers confuse building an audience with building a community.

What’s the difference?

• An audience is one to many.

• An audience is a single broadcasted message.

• An audience is a one-way street.

→ A community is many to many.

→ A community is many messages.

→ A community is many streets.

You get the point. Comments allow you to create a community around your newsletter.

Your readers can reply to your post with their thoughts, interact with each other’s comments, and meet others that are interested in your topic.

And you as the writer get to:

  • Give your audience an outlet to engage with each other

  • Receive immediate feedback on post content

  • Encourage further discussion

  • Become a better writer

So how does it work? Voila…

💡 Pro tip: add a comment button by adding ?comments=true to the end of your URL of the post and link to that. This will both authenticate readers and take them directly to a focused view of the comment section.
