Create A Post

Module 3 — Lesson 12

Phew… you made it.

From here on out — this is what I have in store for you:

  1. How to write your newsletter

  2. How to grow your audience

  3. How to analyze your performance

  4. How to monetize your content.

In other words, the good stuff you’ve been waiting for.

Starts rolling my sleeves up

Let’s get right down to the heart of the matter.

How to Create Your First Post

First, head on over to ‘Write → Posts → Start Writing’.

You’ll see an all-white text editor with a settings bar on the right.

This text editor was left intentionally bland.

It lacks flavor. It lacks sauce. There’s nothing there.

And that’s for two key reasons:

  1. That white represents the universe of opportunity you have to create something special

  2. So you can focus your energy fully on writing (remember how we designed your newsletter in the design lab in module 2?)

If you want to add some oomph to your newsletter simply click the forward slash / on your keyboard to reveal the many widgets you have available to you.

Now to help you maximize your experience with the beehiiv editor, I’m going to pass you off to my brilliant colleague, EJ, who will run you through a tutorial on how to unlock the editor:

You have 2 options:

  1. Watch the video in its entirety to get a full picture of how to use the beehiiv editor

  2. Watch until 3:14 and then I’ll walk you through the rest (we’ll watch the rest of the video in future lessons)

“Thanks, EJ! I’ll take ‘em from here.”

Hey! You’re back. How was it? I hope EJ didn’t give you too rough of a time.

If you’re writing your very first post, think of your first newsletter as an introduction. You may want to include a few sentences about who you are and what they can expect from you in the future.

But don’t just introduce yourself and end it. Give people a quick win up front. Follow the same format you intend to keep in the future and write your first newsletter. For instance, if you intend to share 3 marketing tips, 2 examples, and 1 question, then include those in your first post.

💡 Pro Tip: Just like in the design lab, take extra time to play around and familiarize yourself with the editor. 5 extra minutes today will save hours in the future.

You might be wondering, “Okay, you’ve taught me how to use the editor, but how do I actually write content my readers will love and enjoy?”

That’s a great question. You see, anyone can write a newsletter post. But only those who are serious about the craft of writing will write a newsletter post their readers enjoy and love.

So my question to you is… are you serious about your newsletter?

Are you willing to put in the extra effort now to become a world-class writer?

If so, then head on over to lesson 2 where I’ll deconstruct the fundamentals of writing a high-quality newsletter every time.

P.S. I’ll drop a few case studies of how the top newsletters in the world use the beehiiv editor in lesson 4 of this module… stay tuned!
